This tour will expose you to Russian art. The collection of the Russian Museum, which is one of the largest museums in the country, is located in Mikhailovsky Palace.
The tour can be flexible but it is often started from the second floor where the unique collection of icons is located. You will be able to see with the collection of icons starting from the 12th century, the peculiarities of different Russian painting schools.
You will witness the changes that were brought in Russian art during the reign of Peter the Great.
You will enjoy masterpieces as ‘The Last Day of Pompei’ by Karl Brulov, marine landscapes by Ivan Aivazovsky, paitings by Ilya Repin (‘Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks’ is one of the most famous). The Benois Wing hosts modern art exhibitions.
You see world famous paintings by Leon Bakst, Valentin Serov (‘Portrait of Ida Rubenstein’), Boris Kustodiev (‘Portrait of Chaliapin’), paintings by members of "Jack of Diamonds" collaboration. You will also explore the masterpieces of Russian avantgarde founders, such as Kandinsky, Malevich, and Filonov. We will see the changes in art, which came with the WWII and get to know more about Russian art in 1950-s.
